Newcomerstown, OHio | Early 2oth Century Timber Frame
For this project, the client sought to renovate an existing barn on his property to create a one-of-a-kind living space. Constructed of red oak, the barn was built using sawn timbers, which indicated it was erected in early 1900s.
The more than a century-old barn was beginning to show its age and needed a number of repairs and structural modifications.
The original footprint was expanded using vintage timbers to match the historical look. Water damaged posts were replaced and new pier supports were added. The loft also needed to be relocated to fit the clients’ needs. An an entirely new foundation was created with special consideration given to the sandy soil conditions.
The uneven hip roof required engineering expertise from the construction crew due to the unique angles that it created.
This project brought together many special details to create a comfortable living space including in-floor heat, a side chase for air ducts and a hay rail used to hide the wires for the kitchen pendulum lights. The Hemlock siding is stained to create a weathered look and the structure is insulated using closed-cell foam.
The additional square footage, interior updates and beautiful exterior finish helped the client turn an aging farm building into a warm and inviting home.
