Mason Farms

Preserved with purpose

Dover, OH

This bank barn was showing its age, and the goal was to preserve its historic character while ensuring it remains a dependable structure for years to come.

A Solid Base for the Future

The first step was lifting the frame and setting a new foundation, followed by a concrete floor that replaced the uneven base. Inside, the failing wood deck was removed, floor joists were repaired or replaced, and new tongue and groove flooring was installed to restore stability underfoot.

Preserving Character, Adding Protection

The exterior received careful attention as well. Fresh hemlock siding, soffits, and trim were added to protect the barn while keeping its familiar look intact. Sliding doors and openings were reset to fit the renewed thresholds, and new concrete walks and gravel aprons were placed to guide water away from the building and improve overall function.

A new roof, to be completed by another contractor, will finalize the envelope and ensure the structure is fully weather-tight.

The project was not about changing the barn’s identity but about reinforcing it. The clean white siding and stone base remain as recognizable as ever, while the work beneath the surface ensures the building can continue to stand as part of the farm’s landscape. This barn is both preserved and prepared, a historic form given the strength to endure and still serve when needed.
